Alfred Covino passed peacefully at home on March 16, 2026 surrounded by family. He was born in Port Chester on October 21, 1939 to Alfred and Mary (Flynn) Covino.
Al was raised in Port Chester, graduating from Port Chester High School in 1957. That year he was an All-County first baseman for the baseball team, hitting .420 and leading the league in batting average. A natural righty, at a young age Al’s father forced him to learn to hit from the left side so he could “be two steps closer to first base.” He spent his life predominantly right handed with the exception of swinging a bat and a golf club.
After high school Al attended the University of Connecticut where he was a member of the ROTC. Upon graduation he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army and spent the next two years in both Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Dix, New Jersey.
While down the shore on leave from Fort Dix, he met Margaret (“Margie”) Behan from Summit, NJ. In short order they got married and last month celebrated their sixty first wedding anniversary.
Upon being discharged from the army Al entered the family business – teaching. He had a forty year career teaching fourth and fifth grade students at Douglas Grafflin Elementary School in Chappaqua where he was known as a kind, dedicated and compassionate teacher to his students.
He was a dedicated and loving father, raising his three children, Michael, Daniel and Noreen, in Port Chester and Rye Brook with his wife Margie. He was a constant presence in his kids’ lives coaching their baseball teams, organizing their scout troops, running electronic timing systems for their swim teams and constantly driving them from activity to activity. Many of these activities he continued even after his children were off
to college.
Al served on the board of the Port Chester YMCA for many years. He was a constant presence at the Greenwich Library, spending hours wandering the stacks. He was a voracious reader. He was also a long time parishioner at the Church of the Resurrection.
Al’s favorite time was that spent with his family. He loved celebrating birthdays and holidays together. His favorite time of year was the week he spent each summer at Long Beach Island sharing a house with Margie, their kids, spouses and grandchildren.
This past July the family spent their 22nd summer together at the shore. Al is survived by Margaret, his wife of 61 years, children Michael (Maureen), Daniel (Margro) and Noreen (Drew), and grandchildren Madeline, William, Charlotte, Daniel, Claire, Elizabeth and Grace. He is further survived by his sister Judy (Stephen), brother Joseph (Patricia), sister-in-law Danise (Richard) and many, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister Mary Ellen (Covino) Gaffney.
Visitation will be 9:00am-10:30am on Thursday March 19, 2026 at Craft Memorial Home, Inc. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am at Church of the Resurrection Boston Post Road Rye, NY. Interment will be private.
