Gelasia Ortiz

Gelasia Ortiz, 95, a resident of Port Chester, NY died peacefully in her sleep on April 4th, 2023 after being sick for several months. She passed away surrounded by her family. She was born December 25th, 1927 in Apurimac, Peru to the late Aurelio Calderón and Jacinta Ordoñez. She was the widower of Jose Ortiz W. Gelasia raised and helped raise 3 generations of the Ortiz family. She was a leader, homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. 

Gelasia was a woman of power. She had worldly knowledge and an intellect incomparable to others. She dedicated her whole life to bettering the lives of her children. She would cook, clean and provide for her children at any and all costs, no matter the physical or mental toll. She taught lessons of love, respect and humbleness to her kids, grandkids and great grandkids, aiding them to become powerful, thoughtful and intelligent individuals just like her. She was hardworking and a jack of all trades. She was skilled in cooking, sewing, knitting, embroidering, crocheting and tailoring; all skills that she taught and mastered herself. 

Mrs. Ortiz is survived by her 6 children Guillermo Ortiz Calderón, David Felix Ortiz, Yola Arevalo, Miguel Ortiz C., Isabel Ortiz-Greenhill, Edith Ortiz, and 9 grandchildren J. Allan Ortiz,  J. Elliot Ortiz, David J. Ortiz, Guilermo Ortiz Romero, Armando Ortiz Romero, Elizabeth Arevalo, Edgar J. Arevalo, Gabriella Greenhill, Daniel Greenhill, and 8 great grandchildren Alex, Ethan, Camila, Noah, Oliver, Carina, Christopher and Joshua. Gelasia is also survived by the spouses for her children whom she thought and loved as her own: Luz Romero, Mercedes Barreda, Edgar Arevalo and Peter Greenhill.

Everyone who knew Gelasia would lovingly and respectfully refer to her as Mama Gelasia. She was a caring, generous and kind woman who treated everyone as if they were family.

Visitation will be 4-8PM on Thursday April 6, 2023 at Craft Memorial Home, Inc.

Due to Holy Week A Mass of Christian Burial will be announced at a late date.
