John R. Dick Sr., long-time Port Chester resident, passed away on July 12 th at the age of 89, after a brief illness. John was born to the late William and Estelle (Brown) Dick in Flatbush Brooklyn on March 30, 1934, and was a descendant of early settlers of New Amsterdam. He graduated from Midwood High School and Brooklyn College (BS, Physical Education). John was married on August 12, 1962, at Most Precious Blood Church in Queens, NY to Mary Beth Healey.
Following college graduation, he began working as Assistant Physical Director at the newly built Port Chester YMCA. Over the next 25 years, John became affectionally known as “Mr. YMCA”. He left an indelible mark on the youth of Port Chester throughout his career. In his later years, John was very proud of the countless times “old friends” would remind him of their younger days, and how he taught them how to swim.
Following his YMCA days, he began a new 20-year career with the former Sound Shore Indoor Tennis Club, where he enjoyed interacting with club members, pros, and tennis players, some of which were world renowned. True to his lifelong commitment of serving the community, John was Secretary of the Port Chester/Rye Brook Rotary Club for 40+ years. The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self” which was the standard he lived by.
He will be remembered for his devotion to family, community, and his favorite baseball team. “Let’s Go Mets!”
John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Beth, his children John Jr. (Grace), Michael (Michael), Jimmy (Aimee), Kevin (Mary Beth), Kathleen (Brian), and 9 grandchildren (Melissa, Kyle, John, Jaycie, Kiersten, Ryan, Natalie, Sydney, and Patrick.
