Joseph L. Gioffre, Sr., 95, a resident of Riverside, CT, and a former resident of Port Chester, NY, died May 18, 2024, at home surrounded by his family. He was born Giuseppe Gioffre on September 28, 1928, in Scilla, Reggio Calabria, Italy, to the late Gaetano and Francesca Floccari Gioffre. Joseph was raised and educated in Italy, where he studied engineering before immigrating to the United States in 1948. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954, reached the rank of staff sergeant, and was incredibly proud of his combat veteran status.
Joseph was married on May 16, 1954, at Corpus Christi Church in Port Chester to the love of his life, Modesta Grandazzo, and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Joseph was employed at Arnold Bakery as a supervisor and retired after 48 years. Following retirement, he and his wife opened Odds & Ends Golf on Westchester Ave. in Port Chester.
He was a parishioner of the Corpus Christi Church in Port Chester, a Port Chester American Legion member, a scout mentor with Boy Scout Troop #12 at Corpus Christi Church, and an avid golfer. In his later years, he could always be found tinkering in his backyard, practicing on his putting green, or swimming in his pool. Joseph is affectionately known as Poppi to his grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife, Modesta Gioffre of Riverside, CT; his devoted sons, Gaetano "Guy" Gioffre and his wife Diane (Egnor) of Port Chester, NY; Giacomo "Jack" Gioffre and his wife Donna (Dapice) of Riverside, CT, Joseph Gioffre Jr. and his wife Laura (Jung) of Wappingers Falls, NY, and Anthony Gioffre and his wife Suzanne (Zulla) of Cos Cob, CT; grandchildren Danielle Jaramillo, Nicole Gioffre-Henry, Mark Gioffre, Matthew Gioffre, Jaclyn Gioffre, Samantha Platt, Chris Gioffre, and Courtney Gioffre; great-grandchildren Alyssa Lopez, Tito Jaramillo, Derek Gioffre, and Liam Platt. Joseph is also survived by several nieces and nephews, countless cousins here and in Italy.
He was predeceased by his grandson Stephen Gioffre in 1993, his brother Anthony Gioffre, and sisters Angelina Gioffre, Josephine Bochicchio, and Frances Gioffre.
Visitation will be from 4-8 PM on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Craft Memorial Home, Inc. Funeral Service will be at 11 AM on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY.
