Matthew Cheong Choon Kim, M.D., 92, a longtime resident of Rye Brook, NY, died on May 9, 2021. He was born in Korea on December 1, 1928. Dr. Kim graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1952 and immigrated to the United States in 1953. After completing his surgical residency at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA, he opened his own surgery practice in Port Chester in 1964. He eventually became Chief of Surgery at United Hospital and served as a clinical professor with Weill Cornell Hospital. He retired from medicine in 1997.
Dr. Kim was a longtime member of the Port Chester Presbyterian Church/All Souls Parish and its choir. He was a co-founder and chairman of the board of the Korea Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting emerging Korean musicians.
Dr. Kim is survived by his beloved children: Daniel Kim and wife, Doris Lin, of Freehold, NJ; Susan Kim and husband, Laurence Klavan, of New York, NY; and Olivia Kim and husband, James Lochart, of New York, NY; as well as grandchildren Melody Lin, Maple Lin, Evelyn Lochart, and Kathryn Lochart. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Chae Kum Kim, who died in 2017, and by his eldest son, Eugene Kim, who died in 2018.
A memorial service will be held 10AM on Saturday June 5, 2021 at the All Souls Parish 55 Parkway Drive Port Chester, NY 10573.
