Salvatore Sabia Obituary

Salvatore Sabia, a retired captain with the Port Chester Police Department, passed away on March 6, 2025 He was 92 years old. Sal was born in Port Chester, NY, on May 21, 1932 to Vito Sabia and Marguerita DeAndrea Sabia. He was educated in Port Chester, graduating with the Class of 1950, where he was president of the band. He was an honors graduate of Iona College, Class of 1980, having completed his degree while working around the clock as a police officer. He married his high school sweetheart, Rose Ann Storino, on April 26, 1953, at Holy Rosary Church in Port Chester. Sal was a devout Catholic, serving as an altar boy in his youth and attended Mass daily until his health prevented it.
Sal was an accomplished musician who played both trumpet and string bass in the  552nd Air Force Band in Riverside CA as a Tech Sergeant. When he returned from active service, he served a number of years in the NY Air National Guard where he continued playing. He was one of the founding members of the Port Chester American Legion Band and continued playing in community bands in Port Chester, Mamaroneck, and Port St. Lucie, FL where he was a Snowbird. Sal passed his passion of music to his children all of whom are accomplished musicians. 

Sal was a past vice president of the West Point Parents Club, an active member of Port Chester Seniors before his health declined, and enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife.
Sal served the Village of Port Chester from 1958-1993 steadily moving up the ranks. He was a quiet and unassuming officer who was well-liked and respected by his colleagues and received numerous awards and commendations.
He was predeceased by his parents and six siblings: Mary Re, Lucy Minichini, Nicholas Sabia, Catherine Frost, Vincent Sabia, and Gloria Pennatto; and daughter-in-law Debbie Sabia.
He is survived by his children Anthony Sabia (Amanda), Jody Ann Pongratz (Ara), Mary Ann Sabia (Gisela), LTC US Army, Ret. Steven Sabia (Christine) as well as his grandchildren Joseph Sabia, Anna Sabia Scholten (Travis), Nina Pongratz, Daniel Pongratz, Isabel Pongratz, Gina Sabia Smith (Geoff), Vito Sabia, his great
grandchildren Renee and Adelaide Scholten and Robert Smith, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 4-7PM on Monday March 10, 2025 at Craft Memorial Home, Inc.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 11AM on Tuesday March 11, 2025 at Saint Paul RC Church 84 Sherwood Ave. Greenwich, CT. Interment to follow at Saint Mary's Cemetery Rye Brook, NY
