Stephen Effler Obituary

Stephen Corry Effler, age 77, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026. He was born on June 10, 1948 in Rockville Centre, NY to Helen Corry Effler and Arthur Charles Effler. In 1954, Steve and his family moved to the Green Knolls section of Eastchester. He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary grammar school and Regis High School in New York City. Steve graduated from The University of Notre Dame in 1970 and from New York University School of Law in 1973. He alsoearned an MBA degree from NYU Stern School of Business and a M.Ed. from Manhattanville College School of Education.

Steve married Deborah Carroll on July 13, 1974. They raised their three children, Christine, Kathleen and Matthew in Rye Brook, NY. Steve was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. A lawyer by training, he also taught history in the New York City public school system before returning to the full-time practice of law.

He was an avid reader with a love of camping, gardening, canoeing, Irish music, bridge and basketball. His favorite canoe trip was on the Croton River, often in one of his handcrafted canoes. He relished the weeks he spent each summer camping in the Adirondacks at Rollins Pond Campground, frequenting  Donnelley’s ice cream shop. He loved live music and dancing at his local Irish pub on Sunday nights. He particularly enjoyed watching the Fighting Irish and debating sports stats, but delighted even more in cheering on his children and
grandchildren in all of their various sports and activities. Steve was active in the community, coaching youth softball, soccer and basketball and refereeing volleyball. The joy he found in planning and sharing his favorite pastimes will be missed by his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Carroll of Rye Brook, NY; his sister, Kathleen (John) Marvin of Santa Barbara, CA; his three children, Christine (Alex) Setness of Scarsdale, NY, Dr. Kathleen Effler of Swarthmore, PA, and Matthew (Ashlee) Effler of Scarsdale, NY; his six grandchildren, Kiera and Caitlin Setness, Liam McCorkle
and Patrick Effler, and Victoria and Benjamin Effler; and his nephew, John (Caroline) Marvin, Jr. of Denver, CO and his niece, Dana (Nicholas) Noppinger of Golden, CO.

A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held on Friday, April 10th. A funeral service will be held at The Church of St. James the Less in Scarsdale, NY at 10am on April 11th. For more details please email efflers14375@gmail.com.
