William Nicholas Vaccaro was born in Port Chester 89 years ago and entered eternal life on February 12,
2023. He died peacefully in his sleep.
Deacon Billy, as he was known, was the youngest child of Bernardino and Maria Giovanna (Jenny) Vaccaro. He attended Port Chester High School and was active in the Port Chester community in many ways. After graduating from Port Chester High School, he served in the US army in Korea. Upon returning, he worked in the family business. Billy and his brothers Joseph and Anthony (Lando) opened and operated Vaccaro's Supermarket for 25 years, with the help of many cousins, extended family members and employees. Many individuals got their start in the workforce bagging groceries, stocking shelves, and waiting on customers.
When the supermarket closed, he began his work as a permanent Deacon at Holy Rosary Church and the subsequent Don Bosco Parish. He served the Holy Rosary and Don Bosco Community for over thirty years. While there he helped establish the soup kitchen, food pantry, the day worker program and many of the other ministries that supported the Church Community. He could frequently be found driving the Don Bosco Van through Westchester Country, collecting food donations for the food pantry and soup kitchen.
He was also a 50 year member of the Putnam Engine and Hose Company, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and his work in the community was recognized by several awards.
He is predeceased by his wife Mary Jean Masi Vaccaro, eight siblings; Joseph, Anthony {Lando}, Domenic {Hinkie}, and his sisters Gertrude, (Sr. John Bernard Vaccaro of the Maryknoll Missionary Sisters)
Katherine Ponterio, Mildred Romanello, Anne and Mary Vaccaro, and two children, Angelo Vaccaro and Lucia Vaccaro Nalepka.
He is survived by his daughter Mary Joan "MJ"; Vaccaro of Scituate RI, and son and daughter in law Bernie and Elizabeth Vaccaro of Westwood, MA and his three grandchildren James, Lucia, and William.
