Winifred Lanefski, 89, affectionately known as Winnie, a longtime resident of Port Chester, New York, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Greenwich Hospital surrounded by loved ones.
Winnie was born in the area of Maugherow in Sligo County, Ireland—a picturesque coastal region celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and rich literary heritage—to the late Rose and John McGowan. She immigrated to the United States in 1953 and proudly became a naturalized citizen in 1962.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Stanley Lanefski and her brothers John McGowan and PJ McGowan. She is survived by her nephews Roger Edward McGowan and
Hughbert McGowan, niece, Claire Moran née McGowan, grand nephews, Aodhan McGowan, Cathal Moran and Tadgh Moran and grand nieces, Ava McGowan and Ellen McGowan, all of the country of Ireland.
Winnie was deeply involved in her senior community, where she was cherished for bringing extra cheer and kindness to everyone around her. With her quick, warm smile, caring nature, and genuine willingness to listen, she touched many lives. An avid animal lover, she especially adored her parrots, Lila and George, whom she cared for with great devotion.
